The SAIEE has appointed Sicelo Xulu as its new CEO. He will taking over the reins form Stan Bridgens, who has held this position for more than 12 years.
Sicelo Xulu is a fellow of the South African Institution of Energy Efficiency (SAIEE). He served as president of the AMEU from 2014 to 2016. Xulu holds a PrTech and is a certified director with the Institute of Directors of SA. He holds a B-Tech in Electrical Engineering from the Central University of Technology, a BSc Honours from the University of Pretoria and an MPhil in Electrical Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Johannesburg.
He has completed an accelerated directorship programme with IoDSA and the Executive Development Programme and Municipal Finance Management Programme with Wits Business School.
Xulu worked in a range of electrical engineering capacities, starting his career at Eskom in 1995. He joined City Power in 2002 where he worked his way up through the ranks to become the company’s CEO in 2012, and held that position until August 2017.
The SAIEE has said in a statement that it was aware of the media reports around Xulu when he left City Power as CEO throughout the recruitment process.
“We were also aware of the potential reputational risk to the institute and the perceptions that our stakeholders may hold because of the recent events in our country. Of importance to us was to conduct a fair and ethical process based on (available) proven evidence with a view of recruiting the best possible candidate.”
Xulu was appointed as the best candidate for the post after investigations, intense interviews, assessments and consideration by the recruitment panel.
“References close to him have indicated that he is a trustworthy and competent person,” the statement continues. “No evidence was found that indicated in any way that he has acted dishonestly in his previous job.”
